Within 10 years of Our Lady of Guadalupe’s appearance to a peasant, Juan Diego, on a hilltop near Mexico City in 1531, between 9 and 10 million of his fellow Indigenous people, hitherto adamantly polytheistic and suspicious of the conquering Spaniards’ religion, converted to the Catholic faith. The credit for this mass conversion, the largest in history, usually goes to the striking image of Our Lady. Indigenous in appearance herself, she miraculously appeared on Juan Diego’s tilma, or cloak, on Dec. 12, 1531, an anniversary celebrated in the Americas as her feast day.

But, in fact, few of the new converts, many of whom had walked for days through rough terrain to receive baptism and other sacraments from a handful of scattered Spanish missionary priests, ever saw the tilma, then lodged in a hastily built chapel on Tepeyac Hill, where Juan Diego had experienced

Michelle Nott shares her thoughts on a new book about Our Lady of Guadalupe by Joseph Julián González and Monique González.

I love Our Lady of Guadalupe and jumped at the chance to review Guadalupe and the Flower World Prophecy: How God Prepared the Americas for Conversion Before the Lady Appeared by Joseph Julián González and Monique González.

I am familiar with the apparition story of Our Lady of Guadalupe to Juan Diego. She plays an important part in my own life as our little one lost to miscarriage is buried at the shrine dedicated to her in Lacrosse, WI. However, I was not familiar with the culture of the native people at the time or any of the Pan-Mesoamerican culture leading up to her appearance.

This book has changed my viewpoint on how significant this apparition was and on how present God is throughout history even for those cultures that don’t believe in Him directly. Our Lady of Guadalupe used many cultural references during her interactions with Juan Deigo to make sure that he and the rest of the Nahua natives understood who she was and the message from God she b

Guadalupe and the Flower World Prophecy

As Diego ascends Tepeyac Hill at the start of the legendary meeting between St. Juan Diego and Our Lady of Guadalupe, he is immediately surrounded by lovely music and magnificent surroundings, prompting him to question himself, "Where am I? Could this be the Flower World Paradise in the Land of Heaven that our forefathers talked about?"

St. Juan Diego connects his experience to an old indigenous belief system — a spiritual floral region known as "Flower World." Anthropologists and archaeologists have lately discovered this surprising history. By mentioning this beautiful paradise, Juan Diego reveals a remarkable connection that dates back to the very beginnings of American culture.

Flower World pervaded Pan-Mesoamerican culture from its beginnings, emphasising ancient American man's longing for a paradisiacal afterlife rich in melody and beauty. This is represented expressively in flower song poetry of the time, whose major metaphor is a singer calling down flowers from heaven to collect in his tilma so he may share them with lords and kings.

This fascinating new view of American antiquity provides the framework for a prophetic r

Guadalupe and the Flower World Prophecy

As he neared Tepeyac Hill on its eastern side, he found the Virgin Mary waiting for him. After speaking and being reassured by her that his uncle would be healed, the Queen of Heaven led him westward to the top of Tepeyac Hill. Traveling from an east to west direction (this is an important point we will later explain), she showed him an array of beautiful flowers to gather for the bishop. With great joy, Juan Diego carefully gathered these miraculous flowers in his tilma and brought them to the Virgin of Guadalupe, who arranged them with her own hands. Juan Diego then ran down the hill to present the flowers to the bishop as proof that the miracle of Mary’s mission to Mexico was true.

Upon his arrival at the episcopal palace, yet another miracle manifested itself. Entering the bishop’s room, Juan Diego opened his tilma to pour out the flowers before the bishop. As the flowers fell to the floor, the Virgin Mary’s image appeared on Juan Diego’s tilma. At the sight of this phenomenon, the bishop dropped to his knees and commanded that the image be placed in the cathedral for public veneration. Fifteen days later, the bishop organized a pr
