WHAT?

From running a backup script at regular intervals to starting a specific process as soon as the machine boots, there are plenty of tasks that require scheduling on a Linux system. timers provide a flexible mechanism for scheduling and managing jobs and services.

WHY?

This article is intended to provide a complete overview of timers covering creating, maintaining, testing, troubleshooting and migrating from cron.

1 The timer concept#

timer units provide a mechanism for scheduling jobs on Linux. The execution time of these jobs can be based on the time and date or on events.

timer units are identified by the file name extension. Each timer file requires a corresponding service file it controls. In other words, a timer file activates and manages the corresponding service file. timers support the following features:

    Start-Sleep

    Suspends the activity in a script or session for the specified period of time.

    Description

    The cmdlet suspends the activity in a script or session for the specified period of time. You can use it for many tasks, such as waiting for an operation to complete or pausing before repeating an operation.

    Examples

    Example 1: Pause execution for 1.5 seconds

    In this example, the execution of commands pauses for one and one-half seconds.

    Example 2: Pause execution at the command line

    This example shows that execution is paused for 5 seconds when run from the command line.

    PowerShell cannot execute the second command until the sleep timer expires.

    Example 3: Sleep commands using a **TimeSpan**

    This example makes all the commands in the session sleep for 30 seconds.

    Parameters

    -Duration

    Uses a TimeSpan object to specify how long the resource sleeps in milliseconds. The value must not be a negative TimeSpan and must not exceed milliseconds.

    This parameter was added in PowerShell 7.3.

    Alarm Clock and Sleep Timer

    Set an alarm on an iOS device

    To set up your alarm:

    1. Start on the Profile tab.
    2. Tap the Settings gear in the upper right corner.
    3. Scroll down to tap Alarm Clock.
    4. Set the time and the station you'd like to wake to. (You can also set the snooze option to 5, 10, 15 or 20 minutes.)
    5. Set the volume for your alarm. This volume is independent from your device's system volume, so if you mute your device, Pandora's alarm clock will still play at this volume.*
    6. Tap Save in the upper right.
       

    When you are ready to go to sleep:

    1. Open your Settings and toggle the Alarm Clock setting to ON. You must manually toggle this on every time you want to use the alarm. Also:
