The R&A Foundation shapes history, culture and values.
The story of golf began in St Andrews but today it lives in everyone who plays and appreciates it.As new chapters are written and new heroes are crowned, by remembering the people who built our game and celebrating the values that underpin it, The R&A Foundation inspires those who will carry it forwards. With your support, we ensure that golf’s story never ends.Golf Memories
Beginning as a cabinet of curiosities in the 1800s and known as the British Golf Museum for the past 30 years, it then entered a new era in 2021 as The R&A World Golf Museum.
Situated opposite The Royal and Ancient Clubhouse, visitors can explore the rich history of golf from its very beginnings up until the latest day. It boasts one of the largest collections of golf memorabilia in the world, as well as fascinating galleries documenting the evolution of golf.Through the work of the Museum the Alastair J Johnston Library – representing the world’s largest, most comprehensive collection of golf literature – will be established in St Andrews.Gifted to The R&A by the renowned golf guide collector and IMG vice-chairman, Alastair Johnston has amassed nearly 30,000 volumes since he first started collecting golf books during an internship at IMG in 1969.“Our goal when developing The R&A World Golf Museum was to re-imagine the golf heritage experience; making it appealing to established golf fans whilst attracting and educating those new to the sport.”

St Andrews in Fife is known throughout the world as the home of golf. Or, still better, play on THE course: the Old Course at St Andrews, the course that has seen so many classic moments in Open Championships and other competitions. The 18th green and the 1st tee on the Old Course are overlooked by arguably the most important building in the world of golf, the Royal & Ancient Clubhouse.
Those who are in St Andrews to play golf, or those just visiting the town who want to understand a little more about the game and its impact on Scotland, should look across the
