Tri-Cities, Washington Selected as Host City for NHPA World Horseshoe Pitching Championships in 2024 and 2027

Visit Tri-Cities is proud to announce that the National Horseshoe Pitching Association (NHPA) has chosen Tri-Cities, Washington as the host destination for the prestigious NHPA World Horseshoe Pitching Championships in 2024 and 2027. Each world championship event will bring nearly $1-million in economic impact to the area as 1,000 participants come to the Tri-Cities to compete for the world title.

The announcement was made during the 2023 World Tournament in Lansing, Michigan, where Kevin Lewis, President and CEO of Visit Tri-Cities, and Natalie Clifton, Sports Sales Manager for Visit Tri-Cities, finalized the agreement with NHPA officials.

“The team at Visit Tri-Cities has been a pleasure to work with and we are thrilled to bring our World Tournament to the Northwest,” said NHPA President, Gary Roberts. "Along with some great competition, NHPA pitchers will enjoy the beauty, history and recreation opportunities in and around the Tri-Cities.”

“Horseshoe pitchers are some of the most friendly people you will ever meet, and we are excited to be selected to host the

The Wisconsin Horseshoe Pitchers Association is a non-profit organization created solely for the promotion of organized horseshoe pitching in the State of Wisconsin.  It is a charter of the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association, NHPA, and therefore governs itself by standards set by the NHPA. Annual fall and spring meetings of the WHPA are led by an elected executive board and joined by WHPA members to promote and develop the sport of horseshoe pitching. The WHPA executive board consists of a President, 1st Vice President, 2nd Vice President, 3rd Vice President and Secretary/Treasurer, each with their own duties and responsibilities to endorse the sport within the State.

KENNEWICK, Wash. - The National Horseshoe Pitchers Association World Championship is being held in the Tri-Cities for the first time in its history, according to Visit Tri-Cities.

Visit Tri-Cities Sports Development Manager Natalie Clifton said over 500 pitchers are taking part from all over the U.S., as well as from Canada, Norway, and Germany.

Clifton said the preliminary rounds began on Monday, and the championship rounds started on Thursday. Pitchers range in age from eight to 94. Visit Tri-Cities expects over a thousand people to attend the championships, which is expected to bring close to a million dollars to the area.

“A lot of these people will come in and they want to go explore,” Clifton said. “So they'll go to all the restaurants; they go to the attractions. All the kids want to come in and do junior parties and such. So it's great to see the community be influenced like that.”

One of the athletes is 94-year-old Charlie Tapper from Portland, OR. Tapper loves to exercise, and this sport is good for that. He started running marathons at the age of 50.

Tapper said he got into competitive horseshoe pitching in the 1970s after a neighbor introduced him to the sport.

To all NHPA members and friends:

Thank you to everyone for your patience as the council has been working through the process of preparing for the World Tournament. The last "snail mail" entry was actually recorded today...that was actually mailed on May 20th.

You will note some significant changes this year and we hope that each of you will embrace these changes considering the limited number of pitchers that are attending this year. This will be a huge opportunity for many to see the Worlds best horseshoe pitchers in action, learn new tips and techniques, attend the NHPA Hall of Fame Banquet and Award Ceremony...and participate in the delegate meeting which is sure to be a lively exchange of ideas.
