Three-time X-Games Gold Medalist and Freeride World Tour Champion Candide Thovex stuns us once again with the most absurd terrain choices and ski ability. Candide and Audi—in honor of the upcoming Winter Olympics—packed their bags and traveled to what appears to be some of the most iconic and remote areas of the world to ski. No longer skiing just snow, grass and roads, Candide took on water, stone, volcanic ash, sand, earth, and jungle. After watching for only a minute, the first reaction is simply “No Way. How is this real?” Backflips onto ancient stone staircases? A double backflip onto rocky grass? Whether or not all of this is real (or maybe slightly-tweaked by some fantastic filming and editing skills), you can’t deny that Candide is still at the forefront of the ski world, from his own line of Faction Skis to putting down some of the wildest ski lines of this decade.

Ski the world

Grass

The first stop was Europe’s far north. Camping under the open sky with a view of the enchanting northern lights proved an unforgettable experience. After three nights sleeping in tents, the team continued crossing the highlands and was lucky enough to be able to take shelter in a tiny mountain cabin as the weather took increasingly dramatic turns for the worse during shooting. Looking back, this wasn’t what stood out in everyone’s memory. Instead, it was the Frenchman’s 360-degree jump from the grass-covered roof of their shelter.

Sand

Journeying across endless sand dunes was the ultimate test for man, machine and gear, as the sand crept into every crack and crevice. The tiny trickling grains found their way into meals, sleeping bags and even the crew’s toothpaste. Cameras and lenses weren’t spared either, to the extent that the equipment needed repairs after the excursion into the gritty landscape before filming could continue.

Water

For Candide Thovex, water was one of the most difficult surfaces to conquer on the tour. Much as when waterskiing, it’s plain sailing on shallow, calm waters. Things get tricky when there are waves. Without enough pace

Candide Thovex “Ski the World”

Candide Thovex doesn’t wait for winter and he prefers to Ski The World! Quattro2, also named Ski The World, is Thovex’s obey up to his first Audi film “quattro” and by all counts the setting is much more exotic than his first.

0n December 8th, 2015, Candide released his first advertorial film for Audi to promote their latest Quattro Q7 model. The video, created, produced and directed by Candide, featured Candide skiing and performing tricks on many surfaces including dirt, grass, fallen leaves and asphalt, but no snow. It was viewed over 1 million times on the first day on Candide’s YouTube channel. It was viewed 2.5 million times in the first 3 days and has been viewed over 7.5 million times since being posted to his official YouTube and Facebook accounts. Powder, a reference in the sport of skiing summed it up simply on the website of the magazine: “Candide doesn’t need snow.”

In October 2016, ‘Candide Thovex – quattro’ won two prizes at the Top/Com Grands Prix Consumer 2016 awards held at the Congrès de la Communication Consumer in Paris. The competition rewards the best advertisemen

Who needs snow to skI? Watch Candide Thovex drop in on desert spines as part of last year’s ‘Quattro 2’ video.

Last year, Thovex skied on just about every surface imaginable for his “Quattro 2,” aka “Ski the World,” film. He rode on water, desert, grass, and rock. It was insane.

This video provides more of a behind-the-scenes look at the filming process. But you can watch “Quattro 2” below. I’m imagining Thovex wrecked a lot of skis.

Back in the fall of 2016, ski legend Candide Thovex hooked up with Audi to shoot a commercial. Filmed in the French Alps, it was Thovex’s first full video shot outside of the snow. And, like any other film that revolves around a person throwing themselves down something steep and going as fast as they can, there were outtakes. Now, for the first time, those outtakes are on YouTube, courtesy of the Thovex team.

According to Thovex, the Audi Quattro campaign was what paved the way to the Ski the World Project, which included skiing on water, skiing on sand, skiing on the Great Wall of China, and pretty much just skiing on anything that he could slide on.

While it’s generally accepted that these kinds of videos weren’t shot in one go, it’s always impressive to see just how much goes into making them… especially how much the athlete needs to risk life and limb.
