The Night I Met Babymouse (and Her Creator!)

On Friday, November 14th, in Fairfax, Virgina, the Fairfax County Public Library, cosponsored by the Friends of Pohick Regional Library, hosted a special event with award-winning author Jennifer L. Holm. Having read and loved her middle grade books Penny From Heaven and The Fourteenth Goldfish, I was excited to have a chance to meet Jennifer and have her sign some books. Little did I know I was in for a treat that would open up a whole new world: Babymouse!

The large audience was filled with kids, mainly ages 6 to 10, from many of the local elementary school

Queen of the World!

July 29, 2023
I guess I should be honest and state that if this book had not been chosen as one of our monthly reads in the Children's Literature Group for last February (we were discussing two graphic novels), I would NEVER have chosen Jennifer L. Holm's Queen of the World for myself (and no, I will of course also not be bothering with any of the Babymouse sequels either).

For while I can to a very small extent appreciate the themes presented in Queen of the World and do enjoy the often clever intertextuality (featuring fairy tales, science fiction and the like), I really do NOT AT ALL find Matthew Holm's illustrations visually appealing and actually consider them rather massively annoying and aesthetically grating. Thus any and all potential and actual reading pleasure with regard to Babymouse’s antics and friendship struggles very quickly started to majorly wane, as indeed, I felt continuously distracted by both the annoying graphics and the general lack of text in Queen of the World, and was therefore constantly missing and then searching for (in fact rather essential) narrative information (information that was often hidden in the illustrations a

Caramel just recently got introduced to the Babymouse series written by Jennifer L. Holm and illustrated by Matthew Holm. He really enjoyed the adventures of this feisty little mouse and today he shares with us his thoughts on the first book of the series: Babymouse: Queen of the World. As usual, Sprinkles is taking notes and asking followup questions.

Sprinkles: So Caramel what do you want to tell us about this book?

Caramel: This is a good book if you like stories about mice.

S: Well, do you like stories about mice?

C: Yes.

S: Tell me more.

C: There is this mouse named Babymouse and she is going to school and her teacher is a hippo, and her best friend is a weasel named Wilson. He always reads comic books in class.

S: Hmm. So the characters are all different kinds of animals then. Right?

C: Yes, there is also a popular cat. Her name is Felicia Furrypaws. She is mean.

S: Oh, yes according to the trailer of the book series, Felicia is one of Babymouse’s enemies. And another one of her enemies is her locker! Here is that trailer.

C: This is a funny trailer, but it is true. Babymouse has big dreams and wild imagination.

From GoodReads: It’s the same thing every day for Babymouse. Where is the glamour? The excitement? The adventure? Nothing ever changes, until . . . Babymouse hears about Felicia Furrypaws’s exclusive slumber party. Will Babymouse get invited? Will her best friend, Wilson, forgive her if she misses their monster movie marathon? Find out in Babymouse: Queen of the World, a graphic novel with attitude!

I’m sure I’ve said it before, but I think it always bears repeating, graphic novels are excellent for getting low readers reading more. Don’t get me wrong they’re great for kids who like that visual component too, but they have tons of picture support without the stigma of being a picture book.

Babymouse is a mouse who knows herself. She is swayed into thinking she wants something she doesn’t have, but it doesn’t take her long to come back to her senses. She also has such a rich fantasy life. It’s very funny to watch her fall into putting herself into other roles, like noir detective and Wild West gunslinger. This was a quick enjoyable read.

The art fits the quirkiness of the characters and the humor and quips of Babymou
